A bandsaw box is an organic wooden vessel carved from a single solid block of glued-up or solid hardwood (walnut, cherry, maple). Rather than using traditional joinery (dovetails, mortise and tenons), the entire box—carcass, back, drawer cavity, and front face—is created through a sequence of strategic cuts on a vertical bandsaw.

The 4-Step Slicing Sequence and Kerf Accounting

Because bandsaw blades have a physical cutting width (kerf), every cut vaporizes wood into sawdust. Maintaining continuous matching grain across the box requires precise kerf accounting:

  • Cut 1 (Back Slice): Slice off the back 1/4" of the entire blank. Set this piece aside to be re-glued later.
  • Cut 2 (Carcass Extraction): Make an entry kerf through the bottom or side of the carcass, cut out the interior drawer core, and exit. Glue the entry kerf shut.
  • Cut 3 (Drawer Face & Back): Slice 1/4" off the front and back of the extracted drawer core block.
  • Cut 4 (Hollowing the Drawer): Cut out the center of the drawer core to leave bottom and side walls, then glue the front and back slices onto the hollowed U-frame.

Matching Blade Width to Minimum Curve Radius

Attempting to cut tight swooping contours with an overly wide blade causes the blade back to bind against the kerf, burning the wood and throwing the blade off the rubber tires:

How do I hide the blade entry cut on the outer carcass?

Always cut into the box following the natural wood grain lines, preferably entering through the bottom face or along a dark growth ring. When glued back together with PVA wood glue and clamped tightly, the entry kerf disappears into the natural grain.

How do I prevent the drawer from jamming inside the carcass?

Because the blade kerf removes wood, the drawer core is already slightly smaller than the cavity. However, wood movement and glue squeeze-out will cause sticking.
